BABBAGE, Herbert Ivan R.W.S. 1875–1916

Born Adelaide, his family moved to New Zealand settling first in Hawera, then Wanganui. Studied at Wanganui Technical College and worked as a pupil teacher under the painter D. E. Hutton 1899–1904. In 1904 went to Europe: studied in London and at the Julian Academy, Paris. On his return about 1909, held one man shows in Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth. Served in die 1914–18 war and is said to have died through exposure on sentry duty. A collection of his watercolours is in Turnbull; also represented in Sarjeant Gallery, and Hocken.
