Nineteenth Century New Zealand Artists: A Guide & Handbook

BLEAZARD, Eden Emma 1855–1946

BLEAZARD, Eden Emma 1855–1946

Born in Auckland, daughter of Robert Bleazard, merchant (see above). She and her sister (see above) made several trips to Europe, sketching wherever they were. They were both pupils of Alfred Sharpe who lived in much the same area of Auckland, and early paintings suggest his influence. Did not exhibit until 1881 but made a large attractive watercolour of the family house in Mt Eden 1873. Her work suggests she was well taught as well as talented. Exhibited with ASA 1881–97; in 1885 won three first awards for oils in the society's competitions, in 1887 a prize for design.
