RUMSEY, Edward 1824–1909

A pupil of the famous English architect Gilbert Scott: 1847 won a gold medal at the RA with his drawings of a cathedral. Emigrated to Australia, was one of the Melbourne architects who arrived in page 210 Dunedin after the discovery of gold in 1861. As a Dunedin architect won a competition for a new Government House in Auckland, which, however, was never built. Instead, although his designs for the Supreme Court and the General Post Office in Auckland had not won prizes, he was commissioned to build them. Exhibited: NZ Ex Dunedin 1865 his RA winning plans, but this time they only earned him a bronze medal. Represented: AIML.
