Reports of the Native Affairs Committee, 1898.

[Nos. 274 and 275.—Petitions of Tamati Ru and 46 Others, and Erueti Tiketikeirangi and 19 Others.]

Nos. 274 and 275.—Petitions of Tamati Ru and 46 Others, and Erueti Tiketikeirangi and 19 Others.

Petitioners pray for rehearing in connection with Te Awanui Haparapara Block.

I am directed to report that the Committee is unable to recommend that a rehearing should be granted in connection with this case; but, in consequence of the contradictory decisions given by the various Courts which have considered the same, it is recommended that the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court be asked to exercise his powers under section 43 of "The Native Land Laws Amendment Act, 1895," in order to determine whether the last judgment is in accordance with what may be settled upon as Maori custom and law.
