No. 21, Session II., 1879.—Petition of Eruera te Uremutu.
The petitioners state that the spirit of the Maori is dark because the Government are tying up the land by advancing money to a few persons without the consent of the tribe. They pray that the land maybe loosed, and think that the very beat thing would be to stop the purchasing of land by the Government, and also that surveying and leasing should cease.
I am directed to report as follows:—
That the Committee regard the questions raised in this petition as matters of very considerable importance, and recommend them to the serious consideration of the House and the Government.
