Mr. Walter Gee's Venetian Blind Factory

page 195

Mr. Walter Gee's Venetian Blind Factory.

This factory, which was established in 1873, is situated at 308, Colombo-street North, covering a quarter of an acre o£ ground. Here are made every description of Venetian blinds, inside and out; Holland blinds, Florentine, Oriental, Spanish, and shelter blinds. Among other kinds the spring-barrel, for inside and outside blinds, are made here, Mr. Gee being the only maker of these springs in New Zealand, doing in them a wholesale as well as a retail business. He also manufactures wire gauze, perforated zinc, and transparent blinds of different designs, and is the only blindmaker in New Zealand who gained the gold medal at the New Zealand International Exhibition of 1882 for them. His factory is fitted up with all the latest improvements in machinery for blind-making. The motive power for the machinery is a horizontal Otto gas-engine of one horse-power. As to the quality of his work, he can refer to a very large circle of customers; and, having all the best appliances, he is able to turn out his work at a price that defies competition. He learnt his trade in London, having served his apprenticeship to the well-known blind making firm of Henry Lawrence, of Camberwell.
