No. 20.
Copy of letter from the Crown Solicitor, to the Acting Resident Agent of the New Zealand Company.

Nelson, April 24th, 1849.

Sir,—

Your letter of the 21st ultimo, respecting the exchange of Section No. 1 in the Motueka district, having been reported upon by the Board of Management of Native Reserves, I am directed by His Honor the Superintendent to inform you he cannot approve of an exchange of the section, having ascertained that the Natives have cultivations there, which they do not appear to have entirely abandoned.

The Native Trust having, however, received every facility on the part of the Company in the late exchanges, His Honor will be prepared to approve of a right of way through the section being granted, with a lease of the upper portion or frontage to the wooded gully adjoining, for a term of 40 years at a nominal rent.

I have, &c.,

John Poynter,
Crown Solicitor.

The Acting Resident Agent of the New Zealand Company, Nelson.
