Under Secretary, Native Department, to Alexander Mackay, Esq.
I have the honour, by direction of Colonel Haultain, in the absence of Mr. Richmond, to request you to proceed to Otago by the first opportunity, for the purpose of acting as Crown Agent at the approaching sittings of the Native Land Court to be holden there.
It will be apparent to you how important it is that the interests of the Crown should be properly defended before the Court, and it is with the view of ensuring a final settlement of the claims to be investigated that you are requested to consult with Mr. Mantell, and act under his advice in carrying out the duties intrusted to your charge.
I am to state that the Government rely much on your zeal, ability, and experience in bringing the business to a final satisfactory conclusion.
I have, &c.,
For the Under Secretary.
Alexander Mackay, Esq.
