The Under Secretary, Native Department, to Alexander Mackay, Esq.
Sir,—
In reply to your letter of 22nd January, I am directed to inform you, in reference to Mr. Leggatt's proposal to establish a branch school near to Moeraki, that the Government will be willing to contribute towards the funds required for that purpose, it being understood that Native and halfcaste children will be admitted on payment of the ordinary fees, and that the Government will pay such proportion of these fees as may be found advisable, the parents being called upon to pay the remainder.
In reference to the last paragraph of your letter, I am to inform you that the Government is desirous of making arrangements rather for day scholars than for boarders at the several district schools.
