A Compendium of Official Documents Relative to Native Affairs in the South Island. Volume Two.

No. 6. — D. McLean; Esq., to the Private Secretary

No. 6.
D. McLean; Esq., to the Private Secretary.

Land Commissioner's Office, Auckland. May 27, 1856.

Sir,—

I have the honour to report to you, for the information of His Excellency the Governor, that the result of the investigations of Mr. Johnson, the Officer instructed to enquire into the unsettled claims of the Natives at Canterbury, is to the effect that a payment of one hundred and fifty pounds (£150) to the Kaiapoi Natives, in addition to one hundred and fifty pounds (£150) already authorized for land at Banks' Peninsula, will enable him to settle the outstanding claims in that Province; and from the merit and nature of the Kaiapoi claim, which has always been a source of discontent with the Natives there, I would submit for His Excellency's favourable consideration that this additional payment of one hundred and fifty pounds (£150) should be made.

I have, &c.,

Donald McLean,
Chief Commissioner.

The Private Secretary,
