Downing-Street, October 7th, 1850,

Sir,—

I transmit to you herewith a copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Canterbury Association, together with its Enclosures, relative to claims preferred by certain Natives to parts of the territory in the Middle Island, reserved for the Canterbury settlement.

I have to instruct you to omit nothing which may be in your power to prevent difficulties being raised to the Association obtaining a clear title to the lands, which have been reserved for their colonizing operations.
