The Wahine Disaster

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments

The authors wish to thank Wahine survivors, both passengers and crew, without whose co-operation this book would obviously not have been possible. We're deeply grateful to the many survivors, in Australia as well as New Zealand, who wrote or talked to us at length.

We also appreciate the ready assistance given to us by those who took part in the rescue operation or were involved one way or another in the events of 10 April.

We are indebted to Union Steam Ship Company staff in Wellington and Lyttelton, and in particular to Peter Maxwell, an assistant manager. Barney Scully, the Wellington Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, Marine Department, also gave invaluable aid.

To the Dominion and Sunday Times go our thanks for generously allowing us the use of so many of their photographs.

Thanks are also due to fellow Press Association colleagues who helped us in many ways, especially the association's Sydney correspondent David Barber who did invaluable research for us.

Finally, we acknowledge the encouragement and support of our wives, and their patience while we were endeavouring to complete this book on time; in this task Eileen Lambert's work at the typewriter was invaluable to us both.
