The Rev. James Watkin, of Sydney, Wesleyan missionary, and his wife, arrived at Waikouaiti in the whaler Regia. Mr. Watkin was the first missionary in the South Island. Mount Watkin takes its name from him.
In this year Messrs. G. and E. Weller's whaling station, near the Otago Heads, was abandoned owing to the falling-off of the whale oil supply.
