Maori and the State: Crown-Māori relations in New Zealand/Aotearoa, 1950-2000

[Introduction]

page 295

This book follows the practice of its predecessor in using references which perform several functions: to serve as general indicators of key sources used in developing the preceding paragraphs, to identify the sources of quotes, and to provide a guide to further reading. Sources are cited in full on first appearance, and abbreviated in subsequent endnotes. The book does not extensively cite general histories of New Zealand which are invaluable for placing post-war Crown–Maori relations in the broad context of the country’s history, such as (and especially) James Belich’s Paradise Reforged: A History of the New Zealanders from the 1880s to the Year 2000, Michael King’s popular Penguin History of New Zealand and Philippa Mein Smith’s A Concise History of New Zealand. These and other general histories are useful for providing information and analysis relevant to sizeable sectors of the text.
