April. Monday, 1st.—Fine weather throughout. At 2 p.m. 1839 there arrived 2 Boats, from the Hannah Schooner, having left her on account of light winds. At 7 p.m. went in search of her, but being too dark could not perceive her. At 9 p.m. return'd. At 10 p.m. heard the report of guns, when the Captain put off, and saw the Schooner had brought up. At 11 the Captn return'd with the Captn of the Schooner.

Tuesday, 2nd.—Fine weather throughout. People employ'd discharging the Schooner. The Captn of the Schooner ashore.

Wednesday, 3rd.—Strong winds from the S. throughout. People employ'd fitting Boats. 11 a.m. read the Articles over, and at 2 p.m. pick'd Boats' crews.

Thursday, 4th.—Strong winds from the South throughout. People employ'd in the Bush, cutting ways. Capt: ashore.

Friday, 5th.—Strong winds throughout, from the South. Fore part, mizling rain. People employ'd, part in the Bush and part repairing their Houses. Capt: ashore.

Saturday, 6th.—Strong winds throughout. At 11 a.m. the Schooner parted her cable. At 12 a.m. the Captn Hempleman sent Mr. Crawley and a Boat's crew to render assistance, but found they had got the cable to the Boat, when Mr. Crawley went on board, and assisted in getting her secur'd. At 1 p.m. return'd ashore. People employ'd as yesterday. Captn ashore.

Sunday, 7th.—Fine weather throughout. At 6 a.m. the Captn went on board with Mr. Crawley, when Mr. Crawley and Boat's crew assisted in getting her under weigh. At 9 a.m. return'd ashore. This day kept as Sabbath.

Monday, 8th.—Fine weather throughout. People employ'd, page 821839 part building a chimney, part laying Blubber-ways, and the remainder fitting Boats.

Tuesday, [Apr.] 9th.—Fine weather throughout. People employ'd, part painting Boats, the remainder as yesterday.

Wednesday, 10th.—Fine weather throughout. People employ'd as yesterday. At 2 p.m. the Captn set off for Wongooloa, when, having seen a sail outside, he put off to meet her, and found it to be James Robinson, the Tonguer from Wongooloa. The two boats return'd, when the Captn heard of two boats passing the Heads bound to the river, when Mr. Crawley went off and brought Tuwoowo ashore—a chief; and after giving him powder, shot, musket, and balls, he started for the river to fight Bloody Jack. At 4 p.m. the Captain and J. Robinson started for Wongooloa.

Thursday, 11th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.E., with heavy rain. Boat-steerers employ'd fitting Boats. Captn at Wongooloa.

Friday, 12th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.E. Boat-steerers employ'd fitting Boats the fore part, latter part building a chimney. At 5 p.m. the Captn arrived from Wongooloa with the 2 Natives he took with him.

Saturday, 13th.—Fine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. the Captain of a French Ship laying at Wongooloa arrived, making a short stay. Captn Hempelman giving him 3 cwt. 3 qrs. of potatoes, he then started for Wongooloa. People employ'd as yesterday.

Sunday, 14th.—Fore part hazy, with mizling rain. At 8 a.m. sent Mr. Crawley and Angus out for the first time the Season. At 11 a.m. return'd, bad weather coming on. The remainder of the people employ'd in the Bush cutting Boats' ways. At 3 p.m. was greatly surpris'd at hearing some one call out, but found it to be a mowry from Wongooloa.

Monday, 15th.—Fine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. the Capt: of an American Ship laying at Wongooloa arrived, and at 4 p.m. the 2nd Master of the French Ship, for potatoes; but the wind, shifting to the E, prevented them from returning. 2 Boats out, but return'd at 2 p.m., there being nothing 1839 in sight.

Tuesday, [Apr.] 16th.—Light winds from the westward. At 9 a.m. 3 Boats out and saw a scrag: pursued her, but did not succeed. At 11 a.m. finish'd weighing the potatoes for the 2 Ships in Wongooloa. At 1 p.m. launch'd the Big Boat with three tons of potatoes, which the Captn Chase and the 2nd Mate tow'd to Wongooloa, having sent off Simpson to take care of her. At 2 p.m. 2 Natives from the river, the Capt: giving Tuwoowo one musket and tobacco.

Wednesday, 17th.—Fine weather throughout. At 3 p.m. 2 Boats from Wongooloa, with the Big Boat, 2nd Mate of the American Ship, and 2nd Mate of the French Ship. At 6 p.m. the two Boats started, likewise the Captn and Mr. Williams, to Wongooloa; two Boats having gone out in the Morning, but return'd at 5 p.m., there being nothing in sight.

Thursday, 18th.—Strong winds from the S.W. Part employed laying Boats' ways, the remainder cutting firewood. The 2 Boats at Wongooloa.

Friday, 19th.—Light winds with a heavy swell. 2 Boats out, but return'd in a short time. At 11 a.m. 2 boats from a French Ship at Wongooloa, who made a short stay. At 4 p.m. set off for Wongooloa, but the weather being unfavourable was compell'd to put back. People employ'd at necessary jobs.

Saturday, 20th.—Thick weather, with mizling rain throughout. People employ'd at necessary jobs. Captn and Mate ashore.

Sunday, 21st.—Fore part, thick weather. 3 Boats out, but return'd in a short time. At 9 a.m. the Captn and Mate of the French Ship set off for Wongooloa. At 11 a.m. People out a-fishing. Towards 12 it clear'd away. The Captn sent 3 Boats out: at ½ 4 p.m. return'd, there being nothing in sight.

Monday, 22nd.—Fore part, foggy weather. 4 Boats out. At half-past 7 a.m. the Captn return'd. At 11 a.m. the others page 841839 return'd, the weather being too thick. People employ'd fitting blocks and other necessary jobs.

Tuesday, [Apr.] 23rd.—Foggy weather throughout. 3 Boats out, but return'd at 1 p.m., the weather being too thick. People employ'd bringing spars down for Blubber-ways.

Wednesday, 24th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.W. No Boats out. People employ'd in laying Blubber-ways.

Thursday, 25th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Crawley succeeded in capturing the 1st Whale, and brought her to Bay at 3 p.m. The remainder of the people employed as yesterday.

Friday, 26th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out. At 1 p.m. J. Robinson from Wongooloa. At 3 p.m. the captn started for Wongooloa with J. Robinson, having taken a Coil of Line and Cutting fall. At 5 p.m. the Boats return'd: nothing in sight this day.

Saturday, 27th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out. Mr. Crawley stop'd in, to cut his Whale in. At 5 p.m. the Boats return'd, there being nothing in sight.

Sunday, 28th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out. Mr. Crawley in, clearing away the head. At ½ past 2 p.m. a boat from Otaga to see Mr. Angus. At 5 p.m. the Boats return'd, and at ½ 5 commenc'd trying out.

Monday, 29th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out. At 10 a.m. the Captn from Wongooloa, with the French ship Perseverance, he having piloted her in. At 11 a.m. came ashore with the Mate of the Samuel Robinson. At 1 p.m. went on board and moor'd her. People employ'd trying out; at 7 finish'd.

Tuesday, 30th.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out, when, after a short time, Mr. Williams came in by orders, to get merchandise from the ship Perseverance, which she brought from Wongooloa. People employ'd variously. Boats return'd at 4 p.m., nothing in sight.

May. Wednesday, 1st.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats page 85out. People employ'd as yesterday. At ½ 4 p.m. the Shear-Spars 1839 came ashore.

Thursday, [May] 2nd.—Fore part, strong winds from the S. People employ'd about the Sheers. At 4 p.m. the Big Boat from Wongooloa. At ¼ 4 p.m. Jim Robinson from Wongooloa, with four New Hands, which the Captain employ'd: at 5 P.M. signed Articles. 2 American Boats ashore.

Friday, 3rd.—Strong winds from the E. 3 Boats out; the remainder of the people employ'd at necessary jobs. Boats return'd at 1 p.m. Jim Robinson ashore.

Saturday, 4th.—Strong winds from the W. 4 Boats out; at ½ 1 p.m. return'd. At 2 p.m. Jim Robinson started for Wongooloa.

Sunday, 5th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out; there being nothing in sight, return'd at 1 p.m. The remainder of the day kept as Sabbath. At 3 p.m. a Boat from Otaga. Monday, 6th.—Thick weather, with mizling rain. 4 Boats out, but return'd at 2 p.m. The remainder of the day employ'd at the Sheers. At 10 a.m. shipped a Headman and signed Articles—J. Miller.

Tuesday, 7th.—Fore part, fine weather. 2 Boats out; the remainder of the people employ'd at the Sheers.

Wednesday, 8th.—Fore part, fine weather. 4 Boats out. About 12 o'clock foggy weather, which compell'd the Boats to return. Remainder of the day, people employ'd in the Bush, cutting Boats' ways.

Thursday, 9th.—Strong winds throughout. 4 Boats out, when at 11 a.m. Miller succeeded in capturing a Whale, and, with the assistance of the French boats, brought her to Bay at 5 p.m. The remainder of the people employ'd as yesterday.

Friday, 10th.—Strong winds throughout. No Boats out. People employ'd cutting Mr. Miller's Whale in, and continued until 7 p.m., when they commenc'd trying out.

Saturday, 11th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out; the remainder of the people employ'd cutting in; still trying out.

1839Sunday, [May] 12th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, when Mr. Miller succeeded in capturing a Large Whale from the French ships. People employ'd trying out, and finish'd at 11 p.m. The Whale at Bay.

Monday, 13th.—Light winds, with mizling rain throughout. 3 Boats out, and the remainder of the people employ'd fitting the Sheers. At 3 p.m. lifted her anchors, and took her under the Sheers for cutting.

Tuesday, 14th.—Mizling rain throughout. 4 Boats out. People employ'd cutting Mr. Miller's Whale in. At ¼ 4 p.m. the Boats return'd, there being nothing in sight. At 6 p.m. commenc'd trying out.

Wednesday, 15th.—Thick weather throughout. 3 Boats out. People employ'd turning out the whale, and clearing away the Head.

Thursday, 16th.—Fore part, fine weather; latter part, strong winds from the Northward. 3 Boats out. People employ'd trying out. At 6 p.m. cool'd down.

Friday, 17th.—Strong winds throughout from the Northward, which kept the Boats in. People employ'd clearing away the Head, and rolling off the oil. No trying out.

Saturday, 18th.—Fore part, fine weather; latter part, strong winds from the Southward. 4 Boats out. At 8 a.m. commenc'd trying out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Crawley got a large whale, but was compell'd to Anchor her, the wind being strong. At 6 p.m. finish'd trying out.

Sunday, 19th.—Fine weather throughout. 5 Boats out, towing Mr. Crawley's Whale in. At 8 a.m. brought her under the Shears and commenc'd cutting in, but not being a sufficiency of water was compell'd to leave her. At 1 p.m. brought the blubber ashore and commenc'd trying out. At 4 p.m. very heavy rain, which compell'd us to cool down. Two Men run away.

Monday, 20th.—Fine weather throughout. 2 Boats out. At 7 a.m. set the works on. At 12 o'clock cool'd down, there being no blubber ashore.

Tuesday, 21st.— Strong winds from the Southward. No page 87Boats out. At 10 a.m. pull'd the works down on account of a 1839 Pot being split. At 1 p.m. works refitted; and commenc'd trying out.

Wednesday, [May] 22nd.—Strong winds from the Southward. No Boats out; people employed trying out and refitting.

Thursday, 23rd.—Strong winds throughout. No Boats out; people employ'd clearing away the Head and Small.

Friday, 24th.—Fine weather throughout. 2 Boats out, when Mr. Miller having gone out, found his boat in a leaky condition, and forc'd to put back. The remainder of the people employ'd variously. At 2 p.m. James Robinson from Wongooloa.

Saturday, 25th.—Strong winds throughout from the Southward. No Boats out; People employ'd cutting firewood, and necessary jobs.

Sunday, 26th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. At 10 a.m. James Robinson started for Wongooloa.

Monday, 27th.—Thick weather, with mizling rain throughout. 4 Boats out: Return'd at 5 p.m.

Tuesday, 28th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Miller captur'd a large whale, and sunk. At 12 o'clock return'd with Mr. Crawley, and at 3 p.m. went out again.

Wednesday, 29th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. At 1 p.m. Mr. Miller struck a large whale. Shortly afterwards Mr. Williams struck her, and got stove. Mr. Miller then cut and pick'd up Mr. Williams's crew, and sent Mr. Crawley to the whale, and Mr. Angus in with the stoven boat, and then return'd to assist Mr. Crawley. At 2 p.m. turn'd her up, and took her in towe. At 5 p.m. two more boats came out, and brought her in Bay at 7 p.m.

Thursday, 30th.—Fore part, fine weather; latter part, strong winds from the Southward. 4 Boats out, when having reach'd the Buoys found the Irons had broken. At 5 p.m. return'd with the anchor and line.

Friday, 31st.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out; page 881839the remainder of the people employ'd with the Whale. The water being too low, caus'd a great deal of trouble, not being able to take her under the Shears. People knock'd off.

June. Saturday, 1st.—Fine weather throughout. No Boats out, through a disagreement with the people. At 9 a.m. commenc'd cutting in, and at 4 p.m. finish'd and set the works on.

Sunday, 2nd.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out; the remainder of the people employ'd clearing away the Head and trying out.

Monday, 3rd.—Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out; the remainder of the people employ'd finishing trying out. At ½ 4 p.m. Mr. Williams struck a Large Whale, but was forc'd to cut, it being so late.

Tuesday, 4th.—Foggy weather throughout. 4 Boats out, but returnd in a short time.

Wednesday, 5th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. Nothing in sight, boats return'd at 2 p.m.

Thursday, 6th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, when Mr. Crawley succeeded in capturing a large Whale. At 2 p.m. Mr. Miller captur'd a Large Whale, and took her in towe till ½ 6 p.m.

Friday, 7th.—Fore part, fine weather; latter part, Strong winds from the Northward. 4 Boats out, and took Mr. Miller's whale in towe: at 1 p.m. anchor'd her, when Mr. Crawley went in search of his Whale, but found the Buoy had sunk. At 9 p.m. the boats returnd. The Doctor from Wongooloa.

Saturday, 8th.—Hazy weather throughout. 4 Boats out, 2 taking Mr. Miller's Whale in towe, and 2 Mr. Crawley's; when, having taken her in the Bay, the other Boats came out, and brought Mr. Crawley's Whale in at 10 a.m. At 4 p.m. finished cutting in.

Sunday, 9th.—Thick weather throughout, with plenty of rain. 2 Boats out, but return'd in a short time through foggy weather. The remainder trying out. Mr. Miller and Crawley knockd off.

Tuesday, 11th.—Thick weather, with mizling rain throughout. No Boats out; people employed cutting up Blubber and trying out. Mr. Crawley and Miller turnd to.

Wednesday, 12th.—Strong winds throughout from the Southward, with plenty of rain. No Boats out; people employd clearing away the Heads and trying out.

Thursday, 13th.—Fore part, fine weather; latter part, Strong winds from the Southward. At 10 a.m. Mr. Williams and Mr. Miller succeeded in capturing 2 Large Whales, and brought Mr. Williams's Whale in Bay at ½ 5 p.m. The remainder of the people clearing away the drift blubber.

Friday, 14th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, towing Mr. Miller's Whale in. The remainder of the people employed trying out.

Saturday, 15th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, and tow'd Mr. Miller's Whale in the Bay at 4 p.m.

Sunday, 16th.—Fine weather throughout. 2 Boats out; People employd cutting in. At 11 a.m. the Doctor and Jim Robinson from Wongooloa, with a Crew of the Atlantic's People. At 4 p.m. commenc'd trying out.

Monday, 17th.—Strong winds from the N.W. 2 Boats out; people employ'd cutting in and trying out. At 10 a.m. Roberts went with the Big Boat to Wongooloa, having a crew of the Perseverance. At 1 p.m. the Captn, with Jim Robinson; and when at Wongooloa Heads with the Big Boat was compell'd to Anchor her, the breeze being too strong to get up. At 7 p.m. the wind moderated, and brought the Big Boat to an Anchor in Harbour at 11 p.m.

Tuesday, 18th.—Fore part, light winds from the N.W. 2 Boats out; people employd cutting in and trying out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Angus fastend to a Large Whale and got stove. At 9 a.m. Roberts left Wongooloa with the Big Boat, and shortly after leaving was compelld to put up in Island Bay, page 901839on account of foul winds and no assistance. The crew of the Atlantic walkd over the Hill with Roberts, having left one hand in the Boat. At 11 p.m. Roberts and Smith returnd to Island Bay in one of the Perseverance's boats, and was compelld to stop the night, the wind being too strong from the S.W. Captn at Wongooloa.

Wednesday, [June] 19th.—Strong winds from the S.W.; latter part from the S.E. No Boats out: people employd cutting in and trying out. The Big Boat at Island Bay. Captn at Wongooloa.

Thursday, 20th.—Light winds throughout. 2 Boats out. At 10 a.m. Mr. Williams capturd a Large Whale, and anchord her on account of the weather looking unfavourable. At 5 a.m. the Big Boat left Island Bay, in company with the French Ship's Boat, and brought up in Peracky Bay at 11 a.m. At 4 p.m. the Captn and Jim Robinson from Wongooloa, when the Atlantic's People signed articles; likewise the Doctor.

Friday, 21st.—Strong winds from the S.W. 4 Boats out. At 10 a.m. Mr. Miller got a Large Whale. At 1 p.m. Mr. Williams got a Large Whale. At 6 p.m. brought Mr. Miller's whale in the Bay, and Mr. Williams's off the Heads. Jim Robinson ashore.

Saturday, 22nd.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, and brought Mr. Williams's Whale in. At 9 a.m. Roberts went with the Big Boat to Wongooloa. People employd cutting in and trying out. Jim Robinson ashore.

Sunday, 23rd.—Fine weather throughout. No boats. At 12 o'clock Roberts with the Big Boat from Wongooloa. People employ'd cutting in and trying out. J. Robinson ashore.

Monday, 24th.—Strong winds from the S.E. throughout. No Boats out; people employd cutting in and trying out. At 6 p.m. the moury House, by accident, took fire, and with great difficulty the flames were extinguish'd. J. Robinson ashore.

Tuesday, 25th.—Strong winds from the N.W. No Boats page 91out; people employd clearing away the Bone and trying out. 1839 At 10 a.m. J. Robinson started over the hills for Wongooloa. At 11 p.m. finishd trying out.

Wednesday, [June] 26th.—Strong winds from the westward. No Boats out. This day kept as Holiday.

Thursday, 27th.—Strong winds from the Southward. No Boats out. Fore part, people employd rolling the oil off; Latter part, kept as Holiday.

Friday, 28th.—Strong winds from the Southward. No Boats out; people employ'd cleaning Bone.

Saturday, 29th.—Strong winds throughout. No Boats out. Fore part, people employd cleaning Bone; latter part, kept as holiday.

Sunday, 30th.—Strong winds throughout, with a heavy swell. No Boats out; People employd cleaning Bone.

July. Monday, 1st.—Strong winds throughout. No Boats out; People employ'd as yesterday.

Tuesday, 2nd.—Strong winds throughout. This day kept as Holiday.

Wednesday, 3rd.—Strong winds from the South-West. People employ'd in the Bush, cutting ways for the Boats.

Thursday, 4th.—Light winds, with a heavy swell. No Boats out. People employd cleaning the Big Boat: the Latter part of the day kept as Holiday.

Friday, 5th.—Fine weather throughout. 5 Boats out. At ½ 10 a.m. Mr. Miller captur'd a Large Whale, and brought her in Bay at ½ 11 a.m.; and at 1 p.m. Mr, Smith got a Large [Whale] and anchor'd her.

Saturday, 6th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out, and tow'd Mr. Smith's whale in, and cut both along side the ship Perseverance of Binnie. At 7 p.m. commenc'd trying out.

Sunday, 7th.—Light winds from the N.W., with a very heavy surf, when, having launchd the Boats, a melancholy accident befell; Mr. Miller his Boat getting capsiz'd, and lost 3 men, viz. John Smith, Henry Rummidge, and Thomas Kain, and the remainder of the Boat's crew in a state of insensibility; page 921839and after having applied all the remedies for drownded men, we succeeded in bringing them too.

[Monday, [July] 8th.]Fine weather fore part. 2 Boats out, when Mr. Miller captur'd a Large Whale and anchor'd her. At 10 a.m. the Big Boat from Wongooloa.

Tuesday, 9th.—Light winds from the E. 4 Boats out, but returnd shortly, there being too heavy a swell.

Wednesday, 10th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.W. No Boats out; People employd in search of the Body's.

Thursday, 11th.—Fine weather throughout, with a heavy swell. 4 Boats out. At 4 p.m. returnd, having found the whale cut adrift. At 6 p.m. found the body of poor Smith, which was brought in the Captain's House, the body being wash'd and lay'd out in the best manner the Place afforded. At 8 p.m. calld all Hands to see the corpse. This night Mr. Miller and Mr. Crawley set up all night with him.

Friday, 12th.—Strong winds from the Southward. No boats out. At 1 p.m. followed poor Smith to the grave, with the greatest respect possible, when, having returnd, we fir'd a salute of 3 Guns: when all return'd in peace to their Habitations.

Saturday, 13th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. Plenty of whales in the Bay, but going too fast. At 5 p.m. return'd.

Sunday, 14th.—Strong winds from the S.E. No Boats out; people employd rolling off oil.

Monday, 15th.—Strong winds from the S.E. No Boats out; people employd in the Bush, cutting way's for the Boats.

Tuesday, 16th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Angus capturd a Large Whale, but being too late and too far off was compell'd to anchor her.

Wednesday, 17th.—Fine weather throughout. 5 Boats out, and tow'd Mr. Angus' Whale in the Bay at 4 p.m.

Thursday, 18th.—Fine weather throughout. 2 Boats out. At 11 a.m. Mr. Miller capturd a Large Whale, and anchord page 93her, on account of his Boat being stove. Remainder of the 1839 people employ'd cutting in, along side the Perseverance.

Friday, [July] 19th.—Fine weather throughout. 5 Boats out, and tow'd Mr. Miller's whale in the Bay at 10 a.m., then took her along side the Perseverance and cut her in. The remainder of the people employd getting the Blubber of Mr. Angus's whale up. At 8 p.m. set the works on.

Saturday, 20th.—Strong winds from the N.W. 2 Boats out; people employ'd cutting up Blubber and trying out.

Sunday, 21st. —Fine weather throughout. 3 Boats out; the people left, employ'd cutting up Blubber and trying out.

Triday, 26th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.E. No Boats out. At 10 a.m. cool'd down. Having found the body of poor Henry Rummidge, greatly disfigured, having washed him, he was interred with the greatest respect possible. J. Robinson ashore. The Big Boat at Wongooloa.

Saturday, 27th.—Light winds from the N.E. with a heavy swell. No Boats out; people employ'd trying out. At 3 p.m. Roberts with the Big Boat from Wongooloa. Having got her discharg'd, took her along side the Perseverance, and loaded her with 3 Pots, Try work, Gear, &c. At ½ 7 p.m. page 941839 the Capt: went off and got the Perseverance under weigh, with Mr. Miller and Williams; and after return went on board the Narwhale and spent the evening. At 8 p.m. J. Robinson went out with the Perseverance. At 11 p.m. the Captn came ashore.

Friday, 2nd.—Fine weather throughout. 5 Boats out, when having got to Mr. Miller's whale, saw Mr. Angus had got a Large Whale; 3 Boats having tow'd Mr. Miller's whale in the Bay at 6 p.m.:—the other two Boats towing Mr. Angus's whale in shore, at 6 p.m. returnd, having anchor'd the whale.

Saturday, 3rd.—Strong winds throughout from the N.W. 4 Boats out and towed Mr. Angus's whale in the Bay at 9 p.m. This day McKalister knock'd off.

Monday, 12th.—Fine weather throughout. 4 Boats out. At 11 a.m. towed a Large Whale to the Narwale, when Mr. Crawley went off with Mr. Williams and at ½ 4 p.m. got a Large Whale, but was compell'd to anchor her on account of strong winds from the Westward. At 10 a.m. settled with 2 Frenchmen for their Season, when they and Captn Duvol walk'd over the Hill to Wongooloa.

Tuesday, 13th.—Strong winds from the Nnw. 4 Boats out, towing the Frenchman's whale in. When towing, sighted a Brig off shore, when Mr. Miller and Angus put off to her, and found her to be a Vessel for Captn Hempelman. The remainder of the people employ'd cutting in and trying out. At 4 p.m. the Brig came to anchor, when Capta Hay and Captn Bradley came ashore and stopp'd the evening.

Wednesday, 14th.—Fine weather throughout. 2 Boats out; the remainder of the people employd discharging the Brig of potatoes. At 4 p.m. the Boats return'd with the loss of 3 whales through broken Irons.

October. Tuesday, 1st.—This day the Whaling Season ends, when the Boats were clear'd out, wash'd, oil'd, and taken on the Flat; likewise the Whaling Gear put up, Falls coiled away, &c. Carpenters employ'd in the Bush getting a spar out for a windlass.

Wednesday, 2nd.—Fine weather throughout. Fore part, people employ'd getting a spar out of the Creek for a windlass, and one for the Sheer legs. At 11 a.m. took the Sheers down, and brought two legs ashore to put the crosspiece on.

Thursday, 3rd.—Fore part, mizling rain. People employ'd at the Sheers. At 10 a.m. returnd, the weather coming on so bad could do nothing. The remainder of the day as Holiday.

Friday, 4th.—Thick weather, with rain throughout, accompanied page 100 1839 with strong winds from the Northward. At 5 p.m. sent a Boat off a-fishing, the provisions being short, but was compell'd to return again, the wind being too strong.

Saturday, [Oct.] 5th.—Fine weather throughout. At 6 a.m. commenc'd at the Sheers, and got them up at 11 a.m. The remainder of the day, part employ'd getting erosspieces for the Sheer legs, the remainder trimming the Grave fence. Carpenter employ'd at the Tonguer's boat.

Sunday, 6th.—This day kept the Sabbath.

Monday, 7th.—Fine weather throughout. Fore part, people employed bringing the erosspieces out of the Bushf; Middle and latter part, fencing the Grave in. Carpenter employ'd at the Tonguer's boat.

Tuesday, 8th.—Mizling rain throughout. Fore part, people employ'd getting the old Boats under the Shed; latter part, no work done—too much rain. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Saturday, 12th.—Light winds from the E. by S., with mizling rain, the fore part. Latter part, people employ'd bringing down the windlass; when, having finish'd, perceiv'd a Large Whale close to the sheers. We fitted 3 Boats in the best manner we could, and captur'd her at ½ 4 p.m.; when Mr. Crawley returnd for a couple of anchors, to try and warp her off, she having gone between two rocks. At 5 p.m. Angus returnd with Robinson's Boat in a stoven condition. At 7 p.m. the other 2 Boats return'd, not being able to get page 101 her off. Fore part, carpenter employ'd in the Bush; latter 1839 part, at the Tonguer's boat. Robinson ashore.

Sunday, [Oct.] 13th.—Fine weather throughout. At 6 a.m. 2 Boats went to the whale to see what could be done; at 9 a.m. returned, the tide being too high. At 2 p.m. the Captain went off and returnd at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m. sent a Boat off fishing. Robinson ashore.

Monday, 14th.—Strong winds throughout from the N.W. At 9 a.m. 2 Boats went out to cut the whale in; at 1 p.m. returnd with a raft of Blubber. At 2 p.m. went out and clear'd the head away; at 5 p.m. returnd. At 9 a.m. started for Wongooloa in one of the Captain's Boats. Carpenters employed mending the Tonguer's and Jim Robinson's Boats.

Tuesday, 15th.—Strong winds throughout from the Nnw. At 8 a.m. 2 Boats went off [to] the whale, but the tide being so high could do nothing. At 10 a.m. returnd and cut the Blubber up, and set the Works on. At 2 p.m. went again and towed another raft in the Bay; then was compell'd to anchor it, the wind being too strong. Carpenters employ'd as yesterday. At 9 p.m. cool'd down, not having more Blubber ashore.

Wednesday, 16th.—Fine weather throughout. At 6 A.m. 2 Boats went off to tow the Blubber ashore, and 1 fishing, provisions being very short. At 7 a.m. light the works. At 10 a.m. sent a Boat off again fishing; and at 2 p.m. 3 Boats went out and brought the remainder of the Blubber ashore. Carpenters employ'd as yesterday. This day Robinson's Boat was finish'd.

Thursday, 17th.—Fine weather throughout. One Boat out all the day fishing. People employ'd trying out. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday. At 6 p.m. finish'd trying out.

Friday, 18th.—Thick weather, with a strong breeze from the S.E., and rain throughout. Fore part, 1 Boat out fishing, there being no meat ashore. No work done this day.

Monday, 28th.—Fine weather throughout. At 9 a.m. the Captain went out fishing, and returnd at 6 p.m. with the Boat's Crew from the river, who brought a good supply of pigeons. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Tuesday, 29th.—Fine weather throughout. One boat out fishing, but returnd shortly, the wind being too strong. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Wednesday, 30th.—Strong winds throughout from the S.W. At 10 a.m. one Boat's crew went to the river. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Thursday, 31st.—Fine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. the Boat's Crew heard the report of guns up the river, and found it to be 2 Mowries from Bloody Jack, who was in Oashore Bay with fifteen boats. At 11 a.m. walk'd up the page 103 hill to Mowry Harbour, where the boat was haul'd up, 1839 when were greatly surprised at seeing about one hundred natives, who came with the intention of killing the boy Jacky, which they did in a most barbarous manner. When having got to Mowry Harbour, they refused us our Boat; we then walk'd over the hill to the next Bay, where they kept us as prisoners. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

November. Friday, 1st.—Fine weather throughout. The river party still as prisoners, being kept in great suspense, not knowing whether they were to live or die—still kept as prisoners. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Saturday, 2nd.—Fine weather throughout. This day the river party were escorted to Peraeky Bay by fifteen Bloody Jack's boats, who came ashore at 10 a.m. and haul'd their boats up. On their first landing they discover'd the other boy, Tommy. When in the act of killing him, a chief—by name Tyroa prevented them by claiming the Boy, and shortly after came upon the Captain for payment for the Boy, which was a new six-oared boat, which the Captain consented to, knowing it to be the only way of saving the Boy's life. Carpenter stow'd away in the Bush.

Sunday, 3rd.—Fine weather throughout. Bloody Jack and his crew still ashore, who ask'd the Big Boat as payment for the Place, which the Captain gave, with 3 New Sails. Carpenter still in the Bush.

Monday, 4th.—Pine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. Bloody Jack and his gang started for Wongooloa. At 11 a.m. one boat out fishing. At ½ 10 a.m. the carpenter came out of the Bush. This day took 2 white men on, who came with the gang from Otaga.

Tuesday, 5th. Pine weather throughout. 1 Boat out fishing. Carpenter employ'd at the Tonguer's boat.

Wednesday, 6th.—Fine weather throughout. 1 Boat out all the day fishing. Carpenter employ'd as yesterday.

Thursday, 7th.—Strong winds from the N. 1 Boat out fishing. At 8 a.m. saw 5 of Bloody Jack's Boats pass the page 104 1839 Heads, bound to the Southward. Carpenter and Sawyers at work.

Friday, [Nov.] 8th.—Strong winds throughout from the N. People employ'd coopering the oil. 1 Boat out fishing. Carpenter and Sawyers employ'd as yesterday.

Saturday, 9th.—Strong winds throughout from the N. Carpenter and Sawyers employ'd as yesterday.

Sunday, 10th.—Fine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. Jim Robinson and the chief Tuwoowo from Wongooloa. At 11 a.m. 1 Boat from Oashaw Bay, with 2 White men, having left 2 Natives at the Point, who walk'd over the hill. 1 Boat out fishing.

Monday, 11th.—Fine weather throughout. At 10 a.m. the two Boats left the Bay. People employ'd coopering the oil. 1 Boat out fishing. Carpenter employ'd as usual. This day the Sawyers broke the saw.

Saturday, 16th.—Fine weather throughout. At 5 p.m. the Captain and 2 Boats' Crews went to Wongooloa. This day the Carpenter finish'd the Tonguer's Boat.

Sunday, 17th.—Fine weather throughout. At 6 a.m. the Captn and Boats' Crews left Wongooloa, and when clear of page 105 the Heads observed a Sail standing to the West, which proved 1839 to be the Sirene Brig, which came to an anchor in Peracky Bay at 3 p.m.

Monday, [Nov.] 18th.—Fine weather throughout. At 7 a.m. commenc'd guaging and rafting the oil off to the Brig. At 11 a.m. Jacky White, with 4 of his Boats, came in and landed, when Captain Hay compell'd one of the Chiefs to deliver either himself or the man Tomahawk, who shot the boy Jacky; when all hands got in readiness, with the first weapon that came to hand. After a long debate, thought it the best to discharge him, other White Men being so near hand.
