The rule of a Liverpool newspaper-office is to put the hour of the day uniformly in figures. An inexperienced comp, having been admonished by the foreman for a breach of the regulation, said that it should not occur again. The next night a sub-editor, in reading over the proof of an item, thought to improve it by inserting the line of a well-known song— « Meet me in the lane, love, at half-past nine. » The proof was passed over to the young man to correct, and this was how the line appeared next morning— « Meet me in the lane, love, at 9.30 p.m. » This strict adherence to the style of the office caused him the loss of his situation.
