[Mr S. P. Davis, of the Carson City Appeal]
Mr S. P. Davis, of the Carson City Appeal, Nevada, in an address at a late convention of editors, said: « A country newspaper man has three stages of development. At first he runs a newspaper for glory; dissatisfied with the result, he runs it for spite, and when he gets tired of this he runs it for revenue. » This does not cover the whole field in New Zealand, where some papers are run by members of Parliament, who can't find an independent journal to say a word in their favor; and others are run by men out of Parliament who would like to get in and have a free railway-ticket. And—which includes a fair proportion of both these classes—a good many are run by the mortgagee.
