He was an able and vigorous artist in black and white, one of his best known works being a series of twenty fine plates illustrative of Charles Kingsley's « Hereward, » issued by the Art Union of London in 1870.

He had taken a three weeks' trip to his parents' home at Clareville, Wairarapa, for the holidays. He was not very well on his return to work, and a week afterwards, becoming seriously ill with typhoid fever, was removed to the hospital, where he died. Mr Reynolds was a clever and efficient workman, and in private life was highly esteemed.

Meissonier. —A home telegram of 2nd February records the death of Jean Meissonier, the famous painter, who was born at Lyons in 1812. Of West, a contemporary epigrammatist wrote: « He knows that bulk is not a jest, and gives us painting by the acre. » As West might have painted for Brobdignag, so Meissonier might have been artist for Lilliput. His works were in miniature, finished with photographic delicacy and minuteness, and were so highly esteemed that they realized higher prices than were ever before paid for the productions of a living artist.
