Number Sixty.

It is not easy for us to realize that five years have passed since our first number was published; but the completion of Number 60, closing the largest volume yet issued, bears testimony to the fact. In the article « Our Work, » published in August, and in chapter 60 of « Design » in our present issue, we have in a measure reviewed our labors in the past, and we need add but little here. We have occupied a place filled by no other trade journal in the world. A small place, no doubt; but that the part we have taken has been a useful one, we have abundant testimony from all quarters. In particular, during the present year, have distant typefounders shown their appreciation of our efforts by sending not only sample lines but in some cases complete fonts of type and borders for exhibition and review. In the present issue we have the pleasure of showing the first specimen received from the United States, and a varied and liberal selection it is. Other American as well as foreign houses have signified their intention of sending sample types for illustration, so that this department will in future be more interesting than ever before.

We must apologise for the irregular and late appearance of several issues. The unavoidable absence of the proprietor from Wellington has been the chief cause. We hope soon to bring up our issue again to date.

And now, once again, we ask the Craft in the colonies to do their part. Our journal is not half the size that we wish to make it, and improvements in contemplation from the first, and which would make it more acceptable to our readers, still have to be deferred. Too many take advantage of our newspaper exchange circulation, and do not subscribe. Instead of five hundred monthly, our circulation in the colonies should be nearly five thousand. We have the cordial recognition of every printing and publishing trade organization in the Australian colonies—if the members made it a point also to subscribe, we would undertake to produce a printing-trade journal second to none in the world. Meanwhile, to all who have given us their support hitherto, we tender our hearty acknowledgments.
