Christchurch, June, 1888

Christchurch, June, 1888.

On the 21st May, Mr D. Dunlop, a well-known bowler of the Lancaster Park Cricket Club, who is leaving for Victoria, was presented with a purse of sovereigns by the members of the club. Mr Dunlop has been up to above date a compositor on the Lyttelton Times staff. He served his time in the Press office, and on the completion of his time he went over to the Times. The reductions in Christchurch have been too much for Dave, so he has gone to Melbourne with the intention of settling down there. His family goes with him. We shall hear more of this popular cricketer, as the facilities for the sport which Victoria gives, and more especially to young talent, will make a first-class player of Dunlop, who has several times represented Canterbury, and I expect to see his name figure as a rep. of Victoria in the near future.

I hear from Timaru that Mr W. Foden has taken over the Mail. The late proprietors were barely making ends meet. Mr Muir edits. Mr Foden has had a jobbing office in Timaru for some years. Mr J. Kirby, long and favorably known as editor of the South Canterbury Times, has been appointed editor of the Marlborough Express. Previous to accepting the control of the South Canterbury Times Mr Kirby occupied the position of sub-editor to the Lyttelton Times, a journal to whose columns he has since been a constant contributor. At a farewell meeting on the 26th May, Mr Kirby was presented with an address and souvenir. The chair was occupied by Mr C. C. M'Carthy, who had been associated with Mr Kirby in his youth in the city of Ballarat. Mr J. Hardcastle has taken the editor's (not subeditor's) chair on the S. C. Times, vice Mr Kirby.
