Typo: A Monthly Newspaper and Literary Review, Volume 2

[trade dispatches]

On the 6th inst., at Woodville, Mr J. W, Burlace, of Hawera, was married to Miss H. E. Card, second daughter of Mr A. T. Card. the well-known Picton journalist.

It is rather cruel to parody Wordsworth's We are Seven, but it has been cleverly done in the lines on page 104. We are unable to give the authority, as the verses are going the rounds unticketed.

More Light is the name of a little Spiritist penny monthly, published at Wairarapa, and mostly printed in pica type. The Wellington Dawn faded out last year after an existence of three months, and proved a losing speculation to its editor, Mr M'Curdy.

One of the most iniquitous features in the existing libel law is, that any one bringing a frivolous or vindictive action against a paper can involve it in heavy costs. There has never been a more scandalous instance than that of the late Pope Hennessey action against The Times. The plaintiff voluntarily accepted £2 as a full equivalent for the injury to his reputation; but the paper had to pay « costs » amounting to £8000. This case will hasten the long-promised reform in the law which will make such legalized robbery impossible.

Mr James Greenwood has severed his connexion with the St. James's Gazette, and there appears to be some doubt as to who is to succeed him as editor. Mr Greenwood lifted the Pall Mall Gazette into popularity in its early days by A Night in a Workhouse. When it changed hands nearly ten years ago, and went over from Conservatism to ultra-Radicalism, he left the concern in disgust, and accepted the editorship of its rival. The St. James's has never been a commercial success, having cost Mr Gibbs, its proprietor, something like £1,000 a month during the nine years it has been in existence. Mr Gibbs's hobby is bi-metallism, on which subject he has written pamphlets and given evidence. Curiously enough, the paper which it has cost him so much to maintain has been a consistent opponent of his views on this subject.
