The Inangahua tributary of the Buller has played a big part in the development of the West Coast. It provided a roadable valley by means of which the Buller and the Grey could be connected; and it provided a reef system as an auxiliary to the alluvial goldmining on which the Coast flourished. These gold reefs account for the name Reefton being given to the principal town in the valley. The lower view gives a companion picture of life in the high country above the Grey valley.
