The Track

page 47

The Track.

Tawa Flat.

Ahead, afar, lies the glist'ning track,
Slipping under, and falling back;
Coming, going, smooth stream flowing,
Shifting—twisting twin ribbons of black.
E'er gliding up the rushing steel
Spurned under the restless wheel,
Unceasingly ahead, ever growing,
Endlessly past, away to reel.

Tunnel.

In darkness does the way unwind:
Pressing in comes the path so blind;
And the train goes on, restless, striving
As it leaves the murky trail behind.

Ngahauranga Gorge.

Mistyness, shadows the far-flung track,
Sneaking up and slithering back;
Sinuous in rapid writhing
Shooting away, untwines the slack.

Kaiwarra.

Rushing on speeds the Limited Mail,
Dashing south on its chosen trail;
Roaring past on twin threads bending
Ever leaps backs the silvery rail.

Thorndon.

Abrupt before, lies the track, unled,
Spent and unflung where no wheels tread;
But the way goes back ghostly, wending,
And the way lies back still and dead.

—H. F. Fogden.
