The New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 3, Issue 8 (December 1, 1928)

II

II.

The timeless sands of Egypt burn
Where young battalions wheel and turn,
And, where the year-long tides of Nile
The weary earth to flowers beguile,
The floods of war clash red and churn,
Dear lad! you wondered to discern,
How ground from Time's relentless quern,
New nations traverse, file on file,
The Timeless sands.
And far from beach and bush, and fern,
You watch the sullen sand-drifts spurn
The Sphinx, and ponder at her smile,
That mourns old Death, but gloats awhile
To see Youth spill from life's full urn
The Timeless sands.
