Councillor William Francis Brooking

Councillor William Francis Brooking has been a member of the New Plymouth Borough Council since the year 1896. He was born on the 11th of June, 1844, in London, England, and was educated partly in Melbourne, Australia, and partly in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand in February, 1855, and settled in Taranaki, where he learned the trade of a carpenter and builder, and was afterwards manager for Mr. George until the beginning of the year 1888, when he acquired the business on his own account. During the Maori troubles of 1861–62 Mr. Brooking served with the No. 1 Militia, and with bush parties, and was a member of the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers until the Parihaka scare in 1881. He served as colour-sergeant for many years, and rose to the rank of sub-lieutenant. Mr. Brooking is a director of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Factory, the New Plymouth Investment and Loan Society, and is chairman of the St. Mary's Anglican Church Trust Board; as a Freemason, he is a member of Lodge. late Mr. F. L. Brooking, of New Plymouth, in 1879. He is further referred to as a builder and undertaker in Brougham and Powderham Strnets, New Plymouth.
