The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Otago & Southland Provincial Districts]

Makarewa Settlement

Makarewa Settlement is in the Wallacetown riding of the county of Southland, and at the census of 1901 there was a population of fourteen. Makarewa lies on the south and south-eastern bank of the Makarewa river; it is in the Awarua electorate, and adjoins the settlement at page 919 Grove Bush. The district is entirely devoted to farming. The land is for the most part level, and some of the original bush still remains. There is no post office, school or township, but the wants of the settlers in these matters are supplied at Makarewa Township, about three miles distant.
