Roberts, Charles Henry , Architect, South British Chambers, page 837 53 Esk Street, Invercargill. Private residence, Albert Street, Gladstone. Mr. Roberts was born in 1869, at Ardmore, near Kelso, and is the eldest son of Mr. W. H. S. Roberts, of Oamaru. He attended private schools at Tapanui and Oamaru, finishing at the Waitaki High School. After three years of experience as a carpenter in Oamaru, Mr. Roberts studied as an architect under Mr. Burnside, in Dunedin, for five years. For six months subsequently he worked at his trade as a carpenter and established his present practice on the 4th of November, 1895. Mr. Roberts was married, on the 30th of April, 1902, to Aline, second daughter of the late Mr. J. P. Joyce, for many years editor of the “Southland News.” During his residence in Invercargill he has designed and supervised the erection of a number of buildings, including the Old Men's Home and Children's Home, etc., at Lorne Farm, Wallacetown Junction; the Charitable Aid Board's offices, Tay Street; Mr. Asher's residence in Forth Street; Mr. Vernon's in Gala Street; additions to Messrs Sargood's premises; Messrs J. H. Kirk and Co.'s offices and store in Don Street; Mr. E. Phillips' house in Gala Street; Mr. P. S. Brodie's house, Mr. J. Allan's, and the Victoria Home, all in Invercargill and suburbs. Mr. Roberts also designed the stone Presbyterian churches at Ngapara and Duntroon, and the Presbyterian church at Waipahi; a large dwelling house for Mr. J. McNab, at Black Hills; the business premises of Messrs Thomson and Beattie; of Mr. Ferrar at Otautau; and four two-storey shops in Gore to the order of Mr. William Baker, watchmaker; Mr. D. Mitchell's house at Gladstone; and also the Anglican churches at Orepuki, Fortrose, Otautau and Stewart Island, and Messrs W. T. Murray and Co.'s extensive Milk Preserving Works and Butter Factory at Underwood.
