Markwald, Henry

Markwald, Henry , Manufacturer, Indent Agent, and Importer, 47 Crawford Street, Dunedin. Head Office, 116 William Street, Melbourne. This firm was established in Flinders Lane, Melbourne, about the year 1890. Mr. Henry Markwald, the proprietor, was then single-handed, but the business has spread so rapidly that he has now 110 employees, and has branch offices in London, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, and is also represented in India. Mr. Markwald imports, manufactures, and stocks about 400 lines, covering every class of goods required page 349 by either wholesale or retail dealers. He has identified himself with the tanning trade in Australia, and by bringing about cooperation amongst its members, has been the means of greatly improving the conditions of the industry; and he has cheapened transit by the direct importation of raw materials by chartered vessels. Chemical wares also rank as a most important line. The Dunedin branch was established in August, 1899, and in addition to the office in Crawford Street, the firm possesses a large amount of storage accommodation. The local branch, which does a large import trade, enjoys the confidence of all the leading mercantile firms in the city.
