The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Otago & Southland Provincial Districts]

The Rev. Edgar Ward

The Rev. Edgar Ward is the youngest son of Mr. John Ward, sheep farmer of Thorn Hill, Groper's Bush, Southland. He was educated privately in Auckland, and afterwards went through a course in the University of New Zealand. At first he chose the profession of law, and having passed the necessary examination, he was admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, by Mr. Justice Denniston, at Timaru, in 1889, when he began the practice of his profession. He settled at Riverton in 1890, and took an active interest in local affairs. Mr. Ward became a member of the Borough Council, and was mayor of the town for six or seven years. He was also chairman of the Wallace Hospital Trust, and of the Riverton Harbour Board. In 1893 he was initiated into Freemasonry as a member of Lodge Aparima, No. 77, New Zealand Constitution. He afterwards studied for the ministry of the Church of England page 184 in New Zealand, and is now vicar of St. Michael's Anderson's Bay, and of the Peninsula-cum-Green Island. Mr. Ward married the only daughter of the late Mr. Richard Carrow, formerly of the New Zealand Railway Department, Wellington; and on the birth of his eldest son, in 1896, whilst he was Mayor of Riverton, the members of the Borough Council presented him with a silver cradle.
