The Rev. James Chisholm

The Rev. James Chisholm was born in Scotland and came with his parents to New Zealand by the ship “Three Bells,” in 1858. Shortly after the family's arrival he was attracted by the gold rush, and like numbers of the first adventurers at Gabriel's Gully, he met with much success, and re- page 180 turned to his native land with the object of studying for the ministry. Mr. Chisholm studied at Edinburgh University, and also at Dunedin, and was ordained in 1872. For twenty-nine years he had charge of Milton and in 1899 was called to Palmerston North, where he did good work, and succeeded in uniting the congregation, which, through some disagreement had split in two parties. In 1901 he accepted his present charge. Mr. Chisholm edited the “Outlook” during the absence of Dr. Waddell, and is the author of “Fifty Year Syne,” which gives a history of the Otago Presbyterian Churuch from its origin. He married a daughter of the late Mr. J. B. Park, teacher of the High Street school, Dunedin.
