Cordial Manufacturers — Levien, Jacob,

Cordial Manufacturers.

Levien, Jacob, Aerated Water, Cordial and Pickle Manufacturer, South Canterbury Aerated and Cordial Works, Le Cren's Terrace, Timaru. Private residence, Otipua Road. page 999 Mr. Levien was born in London in 1835, and in 1853 left the Old Country in the ship “Royal Stuart,” for Melbourne. There he chartered the ship “Talbot Castle,” engaged in the timber trade, and carried timber from Tasmania to Melbourne. This venture was not sufficiently profitable, and Mr. Levien then managed a hotel and subsequently kept a restaurant. In 1861 he came to Dunedin, where he kept the Arcade Hotel for two years, and manufactured cordial waters. He then removed to Timaru and started in his present business in Stafford Street, the first business of its kind in South Canterbury. When he found he required more accommodation he took over his present premises, which were originally the Timaru drillshed. He has fitted up one of Hayward-Tyler and Co.'s aerated water machines and a syphon machine, also two turn-overs and two corking machines. Latterly he has begun to manufacture pickles and baking powder, and the “Excelsior” brand is becoming favourably known in Canterbury. Mr. Levien was a member of the first rifle corps in Timaru, and was one of the promoters of the local Oddfellows' Lodge. He is a member of the Timaru Cemetery Board, and also trustee of the Jewish Synagogue. Mr. Levien was married in New Zealand, and he has a family of two daughters.
