Lieut.-Colonel Slater, V.D., of the Canterbury District Staff, has long been intimately identified with the volunteer movement. In 1865 he joined the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, and was in command of the corps for some time. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1883, and to that of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1899. In 1885 he raised and organised the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, a corps which has gained great credit in the provincial district.
