Waiohika.

Waiohika takes its name from Mr. Charles Grey's Station. It is on the Waimata-Ormond road and adjoins Makauri. There is plenty of excellent land in the district, and a large bee farm is conducted by Mr. G. Stevenson within a short distance of the local store, which accommodates travellers.

Stevenson, George, Bee Farmer and Orchardist, Waiohika. Mr. Stevenson was born in 1845 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and became a chartered accountant after apprenticeship to a son-in-law of the celebrated Dr. Chalmers. For some time he was chief clerk in the office of the Accountant on Bankruptcy for Scotland. Mr. Stevenson came to Port Chalmers by the ship “William Davy” in 1873, for reasons of health. He was for three years stationed in Timaru as accountant to Messrs Russell, Ritchie and Co., now the National Mortgage Company. In 1878 he removed to Poverty Bay, and was for five years accountant to Messrs W. B. Common and Co. Mr. Stevenson leased five acres of land at Waiohika in 1884 for the purposes of establishing a bee farm, where he has 250 hives on the Langstroth principle, and produces from four to eight tons of honey per annum. He exports this produce to Wellington, Dunedin, and England. Mr. Stevenson, who is unmarried, has a nice property of ten acres, which is laid out in orchard, at Whataupoko, and which is let on lease.
