Matata

Matata.

Matata is in the county of Whakatane, and in 193 miles from Auckland, from which it receives mails by every steamer to Tauranga, with which Matata is connected by a coach service. The district is devoted to sheepbreeding and farming. There is a population of about 100 persons in the township.

Horse Shoe Inn And Store, (A. H. Ferguson, proprietor), Matata, Bay of Plenty. Mr. Ferguson landed in New Zealand in 1861 at Nelson, where he was on a station for two years. On the breaking out of the goldfields on the West Coast he went droving there, and continued at that work for seven years. He then settled at Tauranga, and commenced farming and storekeeping at Maketu, where he stayed for twenty-three years, and has now been the proprietor of the Horse shoe Inn and storekeeper at Matata for two years.
