Hikutaia

page break

Hikutaia.

Hikutaia is principally a farming district, but mining operations are carried on in the ranges. The flag station bearing its name is on the Thames-Auckland railway, fourteen miles from Thames and 134 miles south-east from Auckland. There is a hotel and schoolhouse in the district, which has a local postmistress. A good deal of gum is brought to market from Hikutaia, which is in the county of Thames.

The Hikutaia Public School was erected in 1880. It has accommodation for about eighty pupils, there are seventy-five names on the roll, and the average attendance is sixty-one. The school is used for services on Sundays. Mr. E. J. Walters, who holds a D2 certificate, is the headmaster, and was appointed to the position in 1897.
