Pukete

Pukete.

Pukete is the name of a flag station seventy-eight miles from Auckland, on the Auckland-Waikato railway, and stands 77 feet above sea level. There is a growing agricultural settlement, which extends for several miles in each direction round the station. The district has a public school.

Pukete Public School was established in the early seventies. It is situated on the Great South Road, and contains one class room and a porch. There are thirty acres of land attached to the school premises, and a teacher's house of five rooms stands on the property. There is accommodation for thirty-five pupils; the number on the roll is twenty-three, and the average attendance twenty.

Mr. Marcus Noble Skelton, who holds a D4 certificate, is the Master in charge of Pukete Public School. He was born in 1875, at Paparoa, where he was educated, and had five years' experience in farming. After serving two years as a pupil teacher (six months at Pahi No. 2 school, and eighteen months at Ngaruawahia) Mr. Skelton was appointed to Pukete school in 1898. He takes a considerable interest in local matters, and acts as secretary for the regatta club and the local debating society. Mr. Skelton is also a member of the Ngaruawahia Football Club, of which he was secretary for two years.
