Cambridge West.

Cambridge West, which is under the jurisdiction of the Pukekura Road Board and the Waipa County Council, is connected with the borough of Cambridge by a traffic bridge over the Waikato. The districts known as Pukekura, Pukerimu and Monavale are in the neighbourhood. There are a number of houses in the settlement, together with a public hall, a Wesleyan church, and a public school.

The Cambridge West Public School, established about 1880, has seven acres of land attached, contains two class rooms and a large porch, and has accommodation for 100 pupils. There are about ninety names on the roll, and the average attendance is sixty-eight. The master is assisted by one certificated and one pupil teacher.

Mr. James Dean, Headmaster of the Cambridge West Public School, holds a D1 certificate, and was born in 1863. He qualified as a teacher at Cape Town, South Africa, arrived in Auckland in 1887, joined the staff of the Education Board, and was successively at Onehunga, Matakana, Newmarket, and Tamahere, before being appointed to his present position in 1894.

Jarrett Brothers (Charles Jarrett and John Jarrett), Traction Engine and Threshing Machine Proprietors, Cambridge West. This firm runs two fine traction engines and two threshing mills, together with grain crushers, chaff cutters and circular saws. It has imported a good deal of its plant.

Mr. Charles Jarrett, Senior Partner of the firm, was born in Broad Marston, Gloucestershire, England, in 1852. He is a wheelwright by trade, and after several years' experience in Birmingham came to Auckland by the ship “Avona,” in 1881. He settled in Cambridge, where he has developed his business into its present character and dimensions. Mr. Jarrett has served for some time as a member of the Cambridge West school committee, and as a Freemason he is a member of Lodge Alpha. He was married, in 1875, to a daughter of the late Mr. S. Loseley, of Bedford, England, and has five sons and five daughters.
