The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Hukanui

Hukanui.

Hukanui is a settlement close to the Woodlands Estate, and about eight miles from Hamilton and eight from Taupiri. It is really a Maori settlement, but a number of the employees on Woodlands Estate have their homes in the district, and there are a few other settlers. There are about 100 Maoris resident at Hukanui, which has a public hall and a Government school.

The Hukanui Public School dates from October, 1891. The building contains two class rooms and has accommodation for fifty pupils. There are thirty-seven names on the roll, and the average attendance is thirty-five.

Mrs Magdalen Laura Russell, who holds an E2 certificate, has been in charge of the school since its establishment. She was born at Hautapu, near Cambridge, served her pupil-teachership at the Cambridge and Hamilton East schools, and was assistant at Cambridge West school for two years prior to her appointment to Hukanui.
