The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Mr. Thomas Coyle

Mr. Thomas Coyle, Old Colonist, was born in Dublin in 1819, and at the early age of two years came with his parents to Sydney per ship “Nautilus.” He was bound to the stonemasons' trade for five years, and afterwards went up-country in the New England district. Nine years later he was sent to Neweastle in charge of a cargo of sheep, cattle and horses. After crossing over to New Zealand, Mr. Coyle was employed in the Thames district for over six years, when he enlisted and served with the commissariat through the Waikato war. In 1867 he moved to Whangarei and was engaged in various occupations till he received the situation of nightwatchaman in 1887. For an old man of eighty-two Mr. Coyle is remarkably hale and hearty, and describes his early experiences in the Colonies with characteristic animation.
