Edwards, John Adams

Edwards, John Adams, Farmer, “Devonia,” Waikaraka. Mr. Edwards' property is 300 acres in extent and lies on the sea coast; about a hundred acres have been cleared and laid down in English grass, which thrives well and serves for grazing Shorthorn cattle. An orchard of nearly three acres is planted with choice fruit trees, including oranges and lemons. Mr. Edwards was born in Devonshire in 1827, was educated in Cornwall and spent over seven years with his uncle, a wine merchant Black and white photograph of lake scene page 552 at Teignmouth. He then went into business as a ship-chandler at Salcombe, Devonshire, where he conducted a prosperous trade for twelve years, including an interest in ship ping. At Christmas, 1859. he landed in Auckland per ship “Harwood” and went up to Waikaraka, where he has resided ever since. Mr. Edwards has passed several properties through his hands and owns Limestone Island, ninety-three acres in extent, where the New Zealand Portland Cement Company are now in active operations and have extensive works. Public affairs have never had any attraction for Mr. Edwards, although he holds the honorary position of conservator of the river. He is married and has two daughters and two sons—the latter being well-known boat builders.
