The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Hoey, Samuel

Hoey, Samuel, Cordial Manufacturer. Whangarel. Bankers, Bank of New Zealand. Private address, Kamo. Business established in 1883. Mr. Hoey's premises, situated near Kamo township, contain the only complete plant of the kind north of Auckland, being the latest pattern by Barnett and Foster. A general aspect of cleanliness prevails throughout, the basement being built of concrete with a floor space of 600 square feet. Very pure water is pumped from a deep spring and Mr. Hoey has a special process of filtration through which all the water passes before being brought into requisition. McEwen's bottlers are used, each capable of bottling forty dozen per hour. Chemicals are imported direct from Home, whereby the middleman's profit is saved. Mr. Hoey does a large hotel business whilst his family trade is steadily on the increase. He was born in Belfast in 1843, and worked as an engineer for twenty-two years before coming to Melbourne per ship “Orient” in 1881. Crossing over to New Zealand, Mr. Hoey established the cordial factory at Whangarei two years later. He takes no active part in local politics.
