Killen, James Miller

Killen, James Miller, M.A., Barrister and Solicitor, Whangarei. Mr. Killen is a native of Ulster, where he was born in 1847, and is a son of the Rev. Dr. Killen of Comber. He received his education at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast, and completed his studies at Queen's College, Belfast, where he gained a scholarship each year of his course, was included amongst the first-class honours men at the final sessional examination, and holds the degrees of B.A. and M.A. from the Queen's University in Ireland, having gained both with honours. Mr. Killen was educated for the Presbyterian ministry. After being licensed to preach, he joined the Church of Scotland, and was for a time parish minister at Birsay, and, later, at Bellshill. Being threat ened with chest disease, he came to New Zealand in 1881. For a time he resided at Tauranga and subsequently moved to Whangarei. Having by private study qualified himself for the law, he passed the necessary examination in 1885, during which year he began the practice of his present profession. He acts as solicitor for the Government Advances to Settlers Department. Mr. Killen was chairman of the town board for six years prior to the formation of the borough, and was elected the first mayor in 1896. He has been chairman of the Board of Governors of the Whangarei High School for many years. Mr. Killen resides on his farm “Woodlands,” Whangarei, his business premises being in Bank Street. He has always taken an active interest in public matters, and has done much for the advancement of the district.
