The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Steadman, Thomas Herbert

Steadman, Thomas Herbert, Solicitor, Whangarei. Mr. Steadman was born in Kent, England, in 1862, and came with his parents to New Zealand in 1863, landing in Auckland. He was educated at the Auckland College and Grammar School, and succeeded in winning two scholarships. On leaving college he was for several years in the Government survey office, and in 1881, decided to study for the law. Entering Mr. William Thorne's office he passed all the necessary examinations in 1884 and settled at Whangarei, where he went into partnership with the well-known solicitors, Messrs. Hughes and George. After Mr. Hughes' death he successfully managed the business until he ultimately took it over on his sole account. Mr. Steadman is very popular in the district. He is a Freemason and holds office as senior warden, is also an enthusiastic yachtsman, and as an amateur photographer has taken many splendid local views. He has been captain of the Whangarei Rifle Club since its formation, is a good shot, and has attended many of the New Zealand Rifle Association's meetings, at which he has been well up on the list for the championship, and has carried off many valuable prizes.
