Mr. Joseph Mallabond

Mr. Joseph Mallabond, J.P., who was a Member of the Whangarei County Council for many years, and at one time Chairman of the North Auckland Charitable Aid Board, was born at Attleborough, Warwickshire, in 1840, and is a son of Mr. William Mallabond, a retired soldier. He was educated at Nuncaton and joined the 36th Regt., but just missed being sent to the Crimean War. At a very early period of service, he was ordered to proceed to the Hythe School of Musketry, where he became a drill-instructor. In 1863 the regiment departed for India and Mr. Mallabond remained with his colours till 1867, being stationed at Benares, Lucknow, and Shahjehanpore, and was a member of the regimental band. In 1867 Mr. Mallabond came to Auckland, via Melbourne, went to the Thames at the outbreak of the diggings and roughed it there for four years. In 1871 he went to Parua Bay and purchased the property which has been his homestead ever since, and where he has made himself a useful public man as a member of the Whangarel County Council, local highway board, school committee, and as chairman of the North Auckland Charitable Aid Board for five years. Credit is given to Mr. Mallabond for his being the first to excite public opinion in favour of “Old Age Pensions,” he having forwarded a scheme to the late Hon. John Ballance, then Premier. All matters affecting the welfare of the district have found in Mr. Mallabond an active and energetic supporter. He has been chairman of the Parua School Committee for eleven years, has taken a leading part in musical matters in the district and was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the Seddon Government in 1892. He is married to a daughter of the late Mr. John Lambert, a highly respected pioneer settler of Parua Bay.
