He carved out of the native forest the Thorne estate, now considered one of the finest properties in the district, as it supports a large number of sheep and cattle. In 1897 Mr. Whittaker Ariell died, and his son, the subject of the present article, succeeded to the estate, and to the various offices held by his father, except that of Government valuer which he declined to accept, as the duties necessitated long absences from home. Mr. Ariell, who is a very prominent man in the district, was for a number of years on the school committee, and took a most active part in 1900 in the formation of the Otamatea Mounted Rifles, a splendid corps in which Mr. Ariell occupies the position of sergeant-major. A member of the corps accompanied the Sixth Contingent to South Africa. Mr. Ariell is a Freemason of long standing, and a member of the Whangarei Lodge. He married Miss Mary Thompson, of Faskin, Matakohe, and has a family of six children; the two eldest boys, in 1901, entered St. John's College, Tamaki.
