Herekino

Herekino.

Herekino is a trading place on the gumfields, twenty-one miles from Kaitaia in Mongonui County. It is 234 miles from Auckland, and has a weekly mail service.

Gardiner, Christopher P., General Storekeeper, Herekino. Mr. Gardiner was born in Connecticut, United States of America, in 1828, and came to New Zealand in 1845. He worked as a sawyer for three or four years in the north, then took to a sea-faring life for over twenty years, and for many years had charge of the “Waipa” steamer on the Waikato river. Later, he entered the employment of Mr. Gibbons and became manager of his saw-mills at the Manukan Heads for five years, after which he went to the Waikato and became proprietor of the Orakau mills. Two years later, he contracted to erect a mill for Mr. Gibbons at Swanson, and afterwards took the management of it. In 1889, he established his present business at Herekino, where he has built up an excellent trade, and is also interested in farming pursuits.
