Peria.

Peria is a gum field trading place, ten miles from Mongonui by sea and land. It is 194 miles from Auckland, with which it has weekly mail communication.

The Peria Public Hall (William Hazard, proprietor). This large hall was erected by Mr. Hazard some years ago, and has seating accommodation for 140 people. It is well patronised by travelling companies, and is used by the residents for local entertainments.

Peria Accommodation House (William Hazard, proprietor). This large two storey building is well and conveniently furnished and offers excellent accommodation for the travelling public. The house contains fourteen rooms including a fine sitting-room, dining-room capable of seating about seventy people, and nine bedrooms. The grounds are tastefully laid out, and there is also a capacious stable.

Flavell, Joseph, Saddler and Harness-maker, Peria, near Oruru. Mr. Flavell established himself as above in 1804, and has gained an excellent connection. He is a thoroughly experienced tradesman, and popular with both Europeans and natives. Visitors to the neighbourhood of Peria, who may be in need of saddlery, are recommended to give him a call. Mr. Flavell was born at Rangiaohia in 1841 and is a member of the Rarawa tribe. He can remember the great fight in 1845 between the chiefs Nopera and Pororna, which resulted in the death of the two principal combatants and many of their followers. Mr. Flavell learned his trade at Mongonui, Kawakawa, and Hokianga.

Hazard, William, Gum Buyer and General Merchant, Peria. Bankers, Bank of New Zealand, Auckland. Mr. Hazard established his business in 1882. His present premises comprise a fine two-storey building with shop having thirty feet frontage and total floor space of over 400 square feet, and are well stocked with goods, with a large business throughout the district. Mr. Hazard is the manufacturer of the “Key Brand” baking powder. He was in the 57th Regiment, in which he enlisted in 1858, and saw over eight years' hard service in New Zealand, going through the whole of the Taranaki war and being present in several engagements. After the war he went to Australia and spent some time roughing it in the back country. Returning to New Zealand in 1881, he moved north and established his business at Peria. Mr. Hazard is married to a daughter of Mr. W. F. Thompson, of Victoria Valley.
