Te Ahuahu

page 571

Te Ahuahu.

Te Ahuahu is 175 miles north of Auckland, and has a weekly mail service. It has also a telephone office.

Knox, Thomas, Mail Contractor, Te Ahuahu. Bankers, Bank of New Zealand, Auckland. Mr. Knox was born in Howiek, near Auckland, in 1856, and spent ten years in the Walkato carrying out ploughing and other contracts. He next established a line of coaches in the Bay of Islands and drove the first team to Hokianga in 1882, but two years later he discontinued the service, there being no mail subsidy, and worked for Mr. Pierce Lannigan at the Calliope dock. Returning to the Bay of Islands, he secured the postal contract in 1897 and again took up the coaching line. A coach leaves Kawakawa on Tuesday morning on the arrival of the Auckland mail and reaches Horeke the same evening, returning on Thursday morning in time to catch the outgoing mail for Auckland. Travellers and tourists can not do better than go through to Hokianga by the Royal Mail route, as the scenery is very interesting. In racing circles Mr. Knox has been successful in running horses at the Thames and Walkato. An illustration of the first coach which ran on the road in 1882 accompanies this notice.
