The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Opuawhanga

Opuawhanga.

Opuawhanga is situated in the county of Whangarei, and is 118 miles from Auckland by steamer to Whangarei, thence by rail to Otonga or Whakapara, which is five miles from the post office. The main road to Whananaki, Helena Bay and Whangaruru runs through the district. The chief occupation of the settlers is grazing, combined with dairying and fruit growing. Nearly all European and semi-tropical fruits grow to perfection. The timber industry is being extensively worked, but, unfortunately, will soon be a thing of the past, especially in regard to kauri and totara, which are fast disappearing. Opuawhanga has a school, post office, public hall, and general store, and a bi-weekly mail. Minerals of various sorts have been found in the district, including gold, iron stone, manganese, etc.

Whimp, Henry, Storekeeper, Opuawanga. Mr. Whimp was born in Yorkshire in 1833, spent his early days in agricultural employment in various parts of England, and emigrated to Australia in 1864. He was in business in Victoria for a while, then removed to North Queensland. Owing to illness and the extreme climate, Mr. Whimp sold his business and came to New Zealand in 1869. He was one of the first to settle in Opuawhanga, where he established his present business in 1880. He owns a farm of 229 acres on which he has carried out considerable improvements. Mr. Whimp has for years been an active member of the local school committee and road board, and has been chairman on several occasions. At one time he represented the Ngunguru riding on the Whangarei County Council.
