Macky, Samuel Cochrane

Macky, Samuel Cochrane, Legal Manager, Victoria Arcade, Auckland. The subject of this notice is the eldest son of the late Rev. John Macky, Presbyterian minister at Otahuhu, and the first moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly of New Zealand, who came to the Colony in 1854. Mr. Mucky was born in Londonderry, Ireland, in 1844, was educated in New Zealand, and in 1859 was born sent to Victoria to study farming. Returning to New Zealand two years later, he was engaged in farming at the East Tainaki till 1873, when he sold out and entered into mining pursuits at the Thames. Through a severe illness he had to give up active participation in mining matters, and accepted the appointment of collector for the Thames County Council. Mr. Macky was business manager for the “Thames Advertiser” for some years, after which he received an engagement as traveller for the firm of Messrs. Ehrenfried Bros. When the late Mr. Ehrenfried removed the head office to Auckland, Mr. Macky was appointed manager of the Thames branch, and retained that position till 1887. He then settled in Auckland, and has been engaged in mining pursuits ever since. Mr. Macky is legal manager for a number of gold mining companies, and he floated the Victoria Gold Mining Company — claimed to be the first “no liability” company in Auckland. Mr. Macky is a resident of Devenport, is married, and has one son. He takes great interest in local affairs. He was a member of the Devonport Borough Council for three years, but, owing to pressure of business, did not seek reelection.
